Our extremely popular Tri-Wizard Tournament is returning to Starfest 2010! Come join us for the activities to win a chance to compete in Tri-Wizard Jeopardy for the grand prize – full-weekend passes to NanDesuKan 2010, Tales from Avistrum at MileHiCon 42, and Starfest 2011!

Starfest 2009 Tri-Wizard Tournament!

Avistrum is back for our fifth year in a row at the annual Starfest convention at the Denver Tech Center Marriott (4900 S. Syracuse St.). See our other post for the full slate of Avistrum activities.

This year, we are announcing a whole new contest, the Tri-Wizard Tournament, where you can win all-weekend passes to three of the year’s biggest conventions – NanDesuKan 2009, Tales from Avistrum V at MileHiCon 2009, and Starfest 2010!

The Tournament

The Tri-Wizard Tournament will be an all-weekend contest, beginning Friday night. Contestants must complete three tasks, and compete as a Galactic Champion, a Fantasy Champion, or an Anime Champion.

Task 1: The House of Vampyr Game

Champions must participate in the House of Vampyr game. Check your bag when you arrive at the convention for details on how to play. Bring proof of your participation to the Avistrum room any time Saturday or Sunday until 2PM and you can proceed to the second task. At that time, you will have to declare whether you are a Galactic, Fantasy, or Anime Champion.

Task 2: The Avistrum Questionnaire or Attend Three Classes

You must complete a questionnaire on your knowledge of the characters and history of Avistrum. Those who score at least 85% will have their name entered in to one of three cauldrons for the final task.

Alternate path: if taking tests is not your strong suit, you can attend three of our four classes for the weekend and receive equal credit.

Task 3: Tri-Wizard Jeopardy!

Everyone who completes the first two tasks will have their names entered in one of three cauldrons as a prospective Galactic, Fantasy, or Anime Champion. One name will be drawn from each cauldron to compete in Tri-Wizard Jeopardy!, with questions from all three spheres as well as many others. The Jeopardy! champion will win the grand prize!

A weekend pass to each of the 3 hottest convention events of the next 12 months:

We know you’ve been quivering with anticipation, so we are happy to announce Avistrum’s schedule of events for Starfest 2008! We are bringing back all of your favorite events from the past few years, including four classes, the PS2 Quidditch tournament, our life-size Quidditch photo set, and Wizard Jeopardy! Friday, April 18

6:30 PM – Wizard Jeopardy in Main Events: Come try your hand at our world-famous Harry Potter trivia contest! Sign up to be a contestant at our table near the Concierge Lounge during the afternoon. We will draw three names to compete for some great prizes. Our champion will receive a free all-weekend pass to Starfest 2009! We will also have a few door prizes that anyone who signs up can win!

Saturday, April 19

All events for Saturday will be in the Avistrum Room (Concierge Lounge).

10:00AM – Doors Open: The doors to the Avistrum Room open at 10:00AM. Come visit us all day long! We will have snacks and craft materials for you to make pennants and posters for your favorite Quidditch teams! Don’t forget to get your NQL t-shirt!
10:00AM – 4:30PM – Quidditch Qualifiers: Coach d’Medici will be overseeing qualifying matches for the Quidditch Tournament. Come play Quidditch World Cup on the PlayStation 2. The top 16 scores will make the tourney!
10:00AM – 6:00PM – Quidditch Photos: Come take pictures on our life-size Quidditch photo set. We have costumes and props to make your photo complete. We will be offering prints of your picture (suggested donation of 50 cents per picture).
11:00AM – 12:00PM – Luck with Professor Aleator Boudreaux: Professor Boudreaux will talk about luck and lucky charms. Space is limited, so be on time!
2:00PM – 3:00PM – Defense Against the Dark Arts: Auror Training with Professors Dowling and Aberfoyle: The Headmaster and Professor Aberfoyle team up to teach you how to defend yourself against the monster in the closet. Once again, space is limited!
5:00PM – 6:00PM – Quidditch Tournament: The top 16 qualifiers from the day will compete in a single-elimination tournament for the Starfest Quidditch Championship. The winner will get a custom award designed and created by Coach d’Medici!
6:00PM – Doors Close: We’re done for the day. Go watch the costume contest and the play, and then come party with us at the Federation Ball!

Sunday, April 20

All events for Sunday will be in the Avistrum Room (Concierge Lounge).

10:00AM – Doors Open
10:00AM – 2:00PM – Quidditch Photos
10:00AM – 2:00PM – Quidditch Free Play: Since our day is so short on Sunday, there won’t be a tournament, but we will have the PS2s set up for everyone to play!
11:00AM – 12:00PM – Charms with Professor Kobiyashi: Everyone’s favorite Charms teacher gives a great lesson on useful spells. Come make a charm bracelet! Space is limited.
1:00PM – 2:00PM – Practical Magics with Mistress Craefter: Mistress Craefter will be teaching a class on Dry Potions. You’ll get to take home two concoctions of your very own! Once again, space is limited!
2:00PM – Doors Close: We’d love to stay longer, but the hotel needs the room back too soon! Enjoy the rest of the convention!

Thanks very much to everyone who visited our room at StarFest 2007! Lady Viola Fey really enjoyed all of the Death Day cards. Read on for winners of our contests, plus a special edition of the Morning Oracle!

Morning Oracle – Starfest Edition

Fans who came by during the weekend were able to pick up a special edition the Morning Oracle. In addition to news of a peace treaty with the Galactic Empire, readers could find out about the PREvention of Transfiguration ENhanced Deception (PRETEND) Act, the attack on Timmernak, and the arrival of Avistrum’s new Quidditch coach, Vittoria d’Medici.

Wizard Jeopardy

Wizard Jeopardy, hosted by the Marauders, was a great success, with more than 100 audience members in attendance. We distributed a number of door prizes as well as our main prize, a free weekend pass to Starfest 2008. Patrick Brownson was the winner of our Jeopardy game after two tiebreaker questions. Our runners-up received an Alivan’s wand and a Harry Potter and the Order of the Phoenix movie poster. We also gave away 50 “mourning armbands” for Sirius Black for our fans to wear at the movie premiere. We would like to thank Sage Moon and Starfest for donating all of our prizes for the event.

New Head Boy, Head Girl, and Prefects!

After the Wizard Jeopardy contest, Headmaster Dowling showed up to announce the elevation of Trent Voertigern and Audrey “Trouble” Deserand to Head Boy and Head Girl. He also awarded Prefect badges to Enigmus‘s Susan Jevoli, Lobostro‘s Emmaline Roffignac, and Colubrae‘s Lucas Zeiapher. Congratulations to all of them for superb work during the last year!

Quidditch Contest

New Quidditch coach Vittoria d’Medici refereed over 60 matches, played on the PlayStation 2, to crown winners for our Quidditch Tournament. Saturday’s winner was Kore-Rhi Drakenwulf of Enigmus, but Opus 2006 winner Andrew Harcrow of Parador reclaimed his crown with a win on Sunday. Each day’s winner claimed a Nimbus 2000 replica broom, courtesy of Starfest.

Art Contest

Our art contest was won by Parador’s Bella Byrne, who submitted a hand-made wand for the competition. She won a free pass to Starfest 2008. Second place went to Susan Jevoli, winning a Harry Potter and the Order of the Phoenix movie poster for her painting of Renfield. Third place, an Alivan’s wand, went to Emmaline Roffignac for her watercolor of an ankh. Well done!

8:00PM – Wizard Jeopardy – Come to Main Events to have a chance to participate in Wizard Jeopardy! Sign up at our table starting from the opening of the convention to have a chance to win prizes including movie posters, gift certificates, Harry Potter collectibles, and a weekend pass to Starfest 2008! The first 50 people in the door receive a free Sirius Black mourning armband you can wear when you go see Harry Potter and the Order of the Phoenix on July 13th.

Saturday, April 21

10:00AM – 6:00PM – Lady Viola Fey‘s Death Day Party! – The weekend of Starfest just happens to coincide with the Lady’s 300th Death Day! Come by and make her a card and enjoy some refreshments while they last!

10:00AM – 6:00PM – Quidditch Photos – Come by and have your picture taken riding a broom and chasing the Golden Snitch, or swatting a Bludger, or shooting the Quaffle at the hoops!

10:00AM – 5:00PM – Virtual Quidditch Tournament – Try your hand at Quidditch World Cup on the PlayStation 2. Meet Vittoria d’Medici, the new Quidditch coach, who just recently retired from the Italian national team. We will crown a champion both Saturday and Sunday!

11:00AM – 12:00 Noon – Introduction to Transfiguration – Join Professor Aberfoyle for an introduction (or refresher) to this core subject in your wizarding education. Try your hand at transfiguring rocks back into rats! (Space limited.)

1:00PM – 2:00PM – Defense Against Dark Magic: Pensieves – Headmaster Dowling will teach you all about pensieves and give you the chance to construct one of your own! (Space limited.)

We would like to thank the hundreds of people who came by and visited us at StarFest, at both our table on Friday and Saturday, as well as the room we had all day Sunday! We hope you enjoyed Wizard Jeopardy hosted by the Marauders on Saturday, and the Potions and Practical Magic lessons on Sunday. Our thanks to Madam Grasella Moffat, a distinguished Avistrum alumna, who was our guest Potions lecturer for the weekend. We would also like to thank Mistress Craefter for her terrific lessons on origami and defensive symbols.

Our Wizard Jeopardy winner, Debbie, received two all-weekend passes to StarFest 2007. Brandi, our runner-up, won a beautiful mahogany wand courtesy of Alivan’s Fine Wandmakers, and Sarah, our second runner-up, won an assortment of Harry Potter merchandise from Sage Moon, including a Gryffindor scarf, a candy-filled cauldron, and a poster!

Our winners in the art contest won the same prizes. Paul, our winner, submitted a beautiful hand-crafted wand. Kate, our runner-up, gave us a terrific sketch of Headmaster Dowling in his office, and Bella submitted a colored drawing of herself in Professor Kobiyashi‘s Charms class at OPUS 2005.

The Quidditch Tournament on PlayStation 2 was won by Adam with a score of 570, who got some great stuff from Sage Moon. Our runner-up, T.J., scored 540 and received a bagful of sci-fi freebies from StarFest.

We had a great time, and we hope you did, too! If you missed out, you still have three weeks to register for our all-weekend term at OPUS 2006!

We are very pleased to announce that registration is now available for Avistrum’s Spring Term at OPUSFest 2006, May 19-21, 2006 (Google Calendar)! If you missed out on the adventure of The Medallion of Akpuch in 2005, you’ll want to be part of this year’s event! Register now at Mollyguard. We only have space for 100 students, so don’t delay!

The festival has moved this year. We will now be located at the Hyatt Regency DTC, 7800 East Tufts Avenue, Denver (Google Maps, MapQuest, Yahoo! Maps).

Schedule

Students will be sorted on Friday night into one of Avistrum’s four houses, and will enjoy a special dessert buffet, with a chance to meet and mingle with your fellow students and the faculty and staff.

Beginning Saturday morning, you will take several classes throughout the weekend in topics to include Divination, Charms, Transfiguration, Care of Magical Beasts, Potions, and Defense Against Dark Magic. You can qualify to be your house’s champion in the Quidditch Tournament finals Saturday evening. Saturday night, our castle is taken over by the Death Eaters for a Dark Wizards’ Ball.

Sunday, classes resume, and you will continue to earn (or lose) points to help your house win the House Cup. The Cup will be awarded at a special close-of-term ceremony Sunday evening.

Be alert! The dark witch Persephone’s minions have been lurking, and you never know when strange things might happen in the castle! The professors are always vigilant, but you might be called upon to help defend the wizarding world!

Registration

Registration is for the entire weekend, and includes full admission to OPUSFest, a student ID badge, tuition for all classes, dessert Friday evening, and admission to Saturday’s Dark Wizards’ Ball. The price for adults is $70, and $60 for children ages 5-12. There is a special $5 discount for online registration (via Mollyguard) before May 18, 2006.

Children under 13 must be acompanied by a registered adult. Children under 5 may attend free of charge when accompanied by a paid adult.

Special Workshop

There is a special robe-making workshop Saturday morning with Mistress Craefter, where you can make your own set of school robes! Registration for this special event is limited to 20 students. You must register separately for the workshop.
